Much Wenlock is a beautiful medieval town, which played a major part in the 19th Century revival of the Olympic games by being the birthplace of Dr William Penny Brookes, the inspiration for the modern Olympic Movement. It has a population of around 3,000 people and is popular with visitors who enjoy the traditional shops, the architecture, history and the many walks both in the town and in the surrounding beautiful Shropshire countryside, which includes the magnificent Wenlock Edge escarpment.
The town was awarded ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status in August 2011 and promotes itself as a ‘walker friendly’ place to visit. There is a ‘Wenlock Walks booklet’ available from Tourist Information, which contains several short local walks, as well as a range of leaflets outlining the routes of longer walks. The town belongs to the national network of Walkers are Welcome towns.
